I just took my 5 month Rott to the vet to get neutered. When the vet looked at his teeth he saw lots of problems. At the time of the visit there were four deciduous teeth that were broken. The adult teeth are not growing in correctly and therefore did not help the baby teeth out. Now I got a call that two additional teeth need to be pulled. The vet said that I will have to do some work on his adult teeth to help them come in correctly. My question are these....How common or rare is this? Is it a lot of work to get them to grow correctly? Has anyone gone through this? Was it successful? Could this be an ongoing issue I will have to contend with? How much should I be concerned with after care? This is a brand new experience for me!!
Yikes, my puppy is getting six teeth pulled!?
I have a 11 month old yorkie that has gone in twice to get his teeth pulled. When I took him in to get fixed at 5 months, the vet suggested that we pull three of his baby teeth out because his adult teeth were coming in, and not pushing the baby teeth out properly. I have seen two of his teeth fall out, but these little ones just wouldnt. He told me that it was a common problem in little dogs - them not losing their baby teeth and that I would need to keep a look out for the other ones. When my dog was about 9 months old I took him back to the vet because his incisors (spelling?) were coming in and the baby ones were not falling out. The vet pulled another 6 teeth that day. My dog made a swift recovery (at least he did to me). He was eating normally by the next day. My dog had a hard time even with puppy shots so I asked for additional pain meds to give him. I gave him soft food that first day and was planning to the second, but he just started eating his normal stuff out of his dish.
My dog is fine now and since all of his baby teeth are gone, it's not a problem anymore at all.
Reply:I worked at a vets office for 7 years and I've NEVER heard of this before. I have seen puppies have to have 1 or 2 deciduous teeth pulled that did not fall out on their own, but 6 teeth? Deciduous teeth can be a problem because it crowds the adult teeth and this causes food to stick between them, causing decay later. I would think that adult teeth would come in on their own, without need for help? This is really a strange situation. Did his parents have trouble?
Reply:I think you should get a second opinion before your dog has all of his teeth pulled out.
