I have a 4.5 months old small breed pup. Today, I found bloody marks on her chew toys, so I figured she had started to lose her baby teeth (poor thing lost 2 front ones today). I know she's in discomfort, my question is should I start feeding her wet food for now or perhaps soak her dry food for the next 2 months? Or is she alright to chew? Thanks.
Should I feed my puppy wet food during teeth-shredding period?
No, you don't have to soak the dry food or start feeding her wet food.
There is a saying that goes "feed a dog mush and their teeth will turn to mush"
The hard food will help the other teeth fall out and help the gums where the teeth are missing grow stronger.
Wet food will keep her teeth and gums under stimulated and she will crave to chew on something harder.
Reply:Just like babies, it's better for them to chew...their teeth will grow in stronger and they'll be happier. My 5 mo MinPin loves his Nylabones and he's recently lost two front teeth too.
Good luck!
Reply:Your puppy is losing it's baby teeth and that's normal, they need hard things to chew on you shouldn't change the puppys food strong teeth are important. My small dog ended up having to get her baby teeth pulled because hers wouldn't come out on their own she had a row of big dog teeth and a row of baby teeth that never fell out because she didn't have hard enough things to chew on.
Reply:If it seems like it's uncomfortable when she chews her dry food, you can soften it a bit with water or offer wet food that day. However, most of my puppies seem to still like their dry food even when teething. A lot of my dogs will chew some of their favorite toys till their gums bleed even when not teething, so that may not be an indicator. Chewing helps move along the the teething process and sometimes is comforting to them. One things that helps are old washcloths that have been moistened and then frozen and then given to the puppy to chew. That feels good on sore gums. Just be sure and supervise.
Reply:just keep giving her dry food dont water it down dont mix it with wet food because once u switch u get a dog that depends on the softer food and wont eat the hard stuff. she is fine chewing. she needs to chew. just keep her on her regular food. dont spoil her if u feed a dog just wet food they will like it too much (just because of flavor) and they will end up stubborn. besides wet food is bad for their teeth.
Reply:No you do not want to do that, a lot of people make the mistake of softening the food or giving canned, this will give her the runs too.
She needs to chew and that what crunk food gives, also open a can of dog food even the top brands and look at all that yellowish jello looking stuff.
IT'S GREASY FATS, sure they need some fats but not that blob. Just keep on doing what you are doing and she will be fine, if however she seems she is in serious pain take her to the vets, she could easily have an abbess something to watch out for.
