How do you get a new 8 week old puppy to stop nipping! His teeth are sharp. Also stop chewing on not his toy.?

Ok, first thing you need to understand is that this is a completely natural behaviour from a puppy of this age. When the puppy is with it's litter they do this to each other to learn bite inhabition (how hard they can bite), the one who bites the hardest wins.

There are a bunch of different methods, no one method will work for all dogs.

Here's a list of different methods I'm familiar with....

1) Give a Firm Growly NO and walk away (granted the puppy doesn't chase after you to bite you)

2) Say nothing and get up and walk away and ignore the puppy for 5 minutes (granted the puppy doesn't chase after you to bite you)

3) Fold the lips of the dog over it's own teeth when its' biting you so effectively it's biting itself.

4) Smack on the nose and give a growly NO, not many people like smacking dogs but each dog is individual and some dogs don't listen to softer methods.

5) Get a yucky tasting spray from your Vet or Petshop and put this on the areas of your body that the dog bites.

6) Re-direct the puppy to a toy rather than your hands.

7) Use a water pistol/spray bottle - however try and keep the water pistol out of sight as you don't want the puppy to only associate punishment when it sees the water pistol otherwise when you don't have the water pistol it will misbehave.

8) 2 minute time out.

Good Luck!

his teeth are sharp, use them against him. Whenever he bites, pinch his own lip between his teeth, not hard, but just enough that he doesn't like it.

I think toys are bad for dogs, they sometimes lead to them chewing on your stuff because they often cannot tell the difference. Encourage them to chew on sticks and such when they are young and the will never chew other stuff. Dogs chew and swallow most of their "toys". The sticks wont hurt them, but over their life 10-100 lbs. of plastic hydrocarbons wont be good.
Reply:You can't stop it. My black lab chewed a hydrolic brake line off the rear axle of my truck. Be patient. Puppies usually get over the chewie stage by the time they're a year %26amp; a half old. For the next 16 months you can either lock him up in a kennel or you can live with it because it's very unlikely that you can stop it.
Reply:you have to work on some training him on ehow there are some steps but i also had tried in the past was when mine nipped i scolded him and then i gently nipped him back on the ear till he yelp a few times like that he may get the hint that if he nips he will get it back or a gently tap on the tip of his nose some times works
Reply:eat her
Reply:When he does this, screech loudly and say "ouch", then walk away from the pup for a while.

This is a natural bahavior puppies use on each other when they don't like what another pup is doing.

Sounds silly, but it works.
