my german shepherd is now 5 1/2 months old and she is moulting terribly which i am surprised that she is moulting this much as it is cold and i would have thought that by now she would be needing her winter coat, so do they lose there puppy coats like they lose there puppy teeth or is there another reason for this extreme shedding, she is in excellent health, eats well, plenty of fluids, had all her jabs, overall her health is excellent she is also a very happy puppy, i have checked her coat and she has no signs of any fleas although she has been frontlined by the vet so i would be surprised if there was fleas, and her skin is in good condition.so can any one maybe have a clue as to why this is happening, this is my first puppy so i am new at this , i have experience with older dogs as i used to have rescue dogs, but as i have a disabled child i deceided to get a pup and she loves the children. so answers on a postcard please, many thanks.
Do puppys lose there puppy coat?
Not a breed I would recommend for a first time owner with a disabled child unless the older dogs were Shepherds Too!
Yes she is shedding her coat as all pups do whatever the time of year. Adult shepherds are also shedding and growing in their winter coats. It is later this year as the weather as been mild! I hope you realise that she will shed all year round whatever the weather and needs to have a good grooming at least 2-3 times if short haired, daily if long-haired. Even with grooming they lose lots of hair and a really good vacuum cleaner is needed to cope with it. Basic training is VERY important with Shepherds and other 'guard' breeds and they require time and attention that some other breeds dont.
But having said all that yes They are great with children when brought up with them and a lovely dog when trained so hope you enjoy your time with her!
Reply:yes they do,plus they put on a winter and summer coat too when the seasons change
Reply:Yes dogs do lose their puppy coat, usually they lose it from their body and then the ears last, also seasons will mean they moult, so they will lose their summer coat when it gets cold to grow a thicker winter one ect. German Shepherds however, moult all year round. I used to have one and had to hoover daily, its unfortunately a price you have to pay to share your life with this wonderful dog. If you keep on top of it however, its not too bad, a quick run round with the hoover will sort it.
Reply:if the heats already on it can cause the sheding too. my dogs have always been inside dogs so once the heat went on, the fur was all over the place
Reply:yes they lose their puppy coat. If she lives indoors in a centrally heated home, she will moult all year round. If dogs live outside they moult only twice a year.. When was the last time she was frontlined? Why did your vet use this particular product? Did you ask for it? Vets push the frontline because they get the largest profit mark up on it. The best one to use is called stronghold and since you have children I would have thought this the best oiption for you. You put the drops on her neck every month and it keeps her free from fleas, ticks, earmite, mange and worms. The latetr is vital for children since they can become blind if infected by the toxacara canis worm. Stronghold is only available on prescription so ask your vet for one. You don't have to buy the stuff from him, you can use a company like hyperdrug and get it from them or ask your vet to price match (mine does). Frontline seemd to stop being effective some 3 years ago now. I have lots of dogs and cats and friends run rescue kennels and we were all having massive flea problems in spite of using frontline. It wasn't until we changed to the stronghold that things improved. My own vet doesn't have it in stock and orders it in for me. It was him who told me about the profit margin thing . I have a brilliant vet who is always totally honest with me.
Reply:yes, they do lose their puppy fur, but the new coat replaces it.
Reply:Yes. It gets more coarse as they grow older.
Reply:It`s my favourite breed of dog. Have you read the book entitled `Living with a German Shepherd dog, if not get it , it`s good read.
Loyal + loving, that is what I`ve found.
good luck.
Reply:Yes they do.
You might notice that the hair along her spine has become flatter and coarser than the rest of her coat which would have been soft and fluffy when you first got her.
This new adult coat will spread so that all the soft downy coat will be replaced by a smoother, waterproof coat. Her coat colour will also change to some extent.
If she has a lot of black on her legs this could be replaced by tan or gold and she might be left with a black saddle and black around her muzzle.
The moulting is probably normal but if it becomes thin and dull or you are still worried you could have a word with one of the nurses at your Vets. The nurse will be able to tell you whether the coat loss is normal or whether you need to see the Vet.
Reply:yes they do lose there puppy fur mine as just gone through it she 18 month old they have two big moults a year summer and winter they do moult all year but it is not that much when they have the big one you never have the vac UN plug if you brush there fur the wrong way then the other way you will get more hair off they have two coats a top coat and a underneath one you can get some oil to put in there food it helps to reduce the moulting and it makes there coat shine and keeps it in good conditioner it is called VITAPET MOULT FORMULA COAT CONDITIONER have had german shepards all my life and would not be with out one hope this helps you
Reply:yes they do but its going 2 b a big dog needs lots of your time is this the best dog 4 u

Siberian Husky teeth?
My Siberian Husky (Juno, Male) puppy lost one of his puppy teeth the other day. We found it in his throw up. He is about 10 weeks old. Is this the normal age for him to be losing his teeth and is that the reason why he threw up?
Thanks,
Skycf7
Siberian Husky teeth?
oh, its okay.
my shih tzu puppy has lost her, too. its called teething. normally, he will start to chew on things. mine chewed on chair legs, she never even touched her toys when she was teething. its normal. after they r gone, adult teeth will grow in, so its okay. he threw it up because his acid couldnt melt it down, and it was a foreign object, so its just a response. my shih tzu did it, too! all the previous dogs i had also threw up their teeth if they accidentaly swallowed it. itll soon pass. dont worry. =] hope this helps!
Reply:Dogs don't loose teeth. No it isn't normal. I got my dog at 3 or 4 months and she has never lost any teeth. take him to his vet.
Reply:Of course, dog loose teeth. I have a husky also. I'm not shure about the age though. It sounds about right though.
Reply:ya its about time for teeth losing .. she proboly threw it up because her stomach was upset for somereason and the tooth just didnt get broken down my stomach acid
Reply:Puppies lose their "puppy teeth" just like people lose their baby teeth. 10 weeks old sounds young for this. Most of my dogs lost theirs at about five months old. I've never seen a dog throw up for this reason but If he only threw up once I wouldn't worry about it.

Puppy that bites, help?
My 4 month old Aussie/Husky male puppy bites.
Not hard or to injure, but he's got sharp puppy teeth and he needs to stop.
Its how he tries to initiate play too, if he wants to play, he'll bring the toy over and bite your feet or legs until you pick up the toy.
I've tried the yelping technique and it just seems to confuse him more than anything else. I don't want to use his crate as a place of punishment for biting because it took forever to convince him he's a good boy when he's in there.
Help please?

Puppy that bites, help?
Way cute pup!
When puppies bite each other during play, they can bite harder because their skin is tougher than ours. When they hurt each other, they yelp and stop playing for a second... then it's back on.
What you need to do when he bites you (no matter how hard) is "Yipe!" in a loud, high pitched voice and rectract your hand/foot, stop playing for a minute. Your pup will more than likely stop, look at you quizzically (cock his head) and offer you a lick, or an I'm sorry nuzzle. Then pet him and you can continue playing... He should get the idea. Later, when he's older you can introduce the command 'No bite' or 'No teeth'.
Good luck!!

Reply:Husky's are very very stuborn i have a german shepard husky mix that used to bite me all the time when she didnt get what she wanted. Then i saw something where they tell you to bite your dogs ear (NOT HARD) but so they know you are not messing around, In husky's since they are pack dogs that is what the pack leader would do to the dog who wasnt doing something right. Dont hit your dog for biting it will make it worse and make the dog mean, (my inlaws have a crazy corgi) Huskys are also mouthy. you can try a plastic bone that has little bumps on it they help.
Reply:It's normal for puppies to play this way. Something that works sometimes if it you completely ignore him when he bites you (especially if he is trying to get your attention to play). My puppy would jump up on me when he wanted to play and after continuing to ignore him when he does this he now sits in front of me and whines a little if he wants attention. If your puppy is alreay playing with you and he bites, say "No" then walk away from him, come back in a minute or so and start playing with him again, if he bites, again say no and walk away. Eventually he should get the idea that every time he bites, play stops.

Puppy Biting?
I know puppies teeth but mine bites a lot more than any puppy ive ever owned before (he's like 3 months old now). He also started bitin the corners of the couch. I dont let him chew on my hands even though thats really tough cause its like impossible to pet him, he has plenty of different types of chew toys, ive bought him that bitter apple spray stuff and sprayed it liberally on items, but he continues to bite everything...(the vet didnt see anythin wrong with him) should i be concerned about this aggresivish bitin habit? is this normal for a pomeranian? any thoughts are welcome...
Puppy Biting?
my dog did that all the time when he was a puppy, we didn't really do much to stop it because he was teething. I wish we would have tried to stop it because now when you pick him up to put him out, he will bite or when you try to pet him he bites. I would continue telling your dog no, and using the apple spray. But it is normal for puppies to be chewing that much.
Reply:its ok

Reply:IDK if thats normal but I would slap him untill he stopped bitting. Dont mean to sound cruel but u gotta show him whos boss.
Reply:all puppies bite people cuz thatz how they play, all of the dogs ive had did the same thing
Reply:It's a small dog thing, He's teething also, my chihuahua was like that he'd bite anything even mine and my husbands nipples got bitten at times lol
Reply:i have never had that kind of dog, so i wouldn't know if it's normal behavior.
My Father-In-Law cured his dog of chewing on things such as furnature by getting tobasco sauce, and putting a little on a Q tip, and dabbing a little where he didn't want the dog to bite. The dog gets that on their tongue, and they will realize that is someplace they don't want to bite. it is not harmful in any way.
Reply:Hell no it's not ok. Put some gloves on for the mean time. See a dog trainer about this problem, so the dog doesn't see this as an ok thing to do on a regular basis. You have to put a stop to this behavior now.
Reply:Fill another another bottle with water and spray him when he bites. Make sure to say 'NO!' each timeyou spray him, later him just hearing the word should stop him.
Reply:It is normal! But if you want it to quit you are going to have to make sure everytime you catch him in the act you tell him no in a stern voice so he knows that you are serious! If it gets really bad you can always try a shock collar or get bitter apple spray from the pet store they both work very well just if you get a schock collar don't put it over 2 . Best of luck with your new baby!
Reply:well some breeds chew more then others you should look up the breed and find out more about their habits but here are some tricks get a spray bottle with water and squirt him every time he does it or u can get a soda can and put a few Penny's in it then shake it when he does something wrong. DONT LET HIM BITE ANYBODY OR EVEN YOU if u let him that can lead to him thinking its OK to bite people don't want him to get comfortable in that
Reply:I feel your pain. I have 4 dogs. My first one was so bad that I went to a butcher to get stew bones to give the dog, so he would have something to chew on. I really needed a rest from him biting at my hands and legs. He or she will grow out of this. The only thing you can do is to keep available chew toys that the dog likes to keep him occupied. I used to spray the bitter apple in my dog's mouth when he tried to chew things. However, I had a very, very stubborn dog. He still is. You can also try "Boundary" which is another spray that is supposed to keep dogs away. Warning though, it really stinks. Don't spray this directly in your dog's mouth. I wish you luck. It will all end. Hopefully by the time their 1-2 years of age.
Reply:My puppy went through a biting phase, the all did. When the went to bite my hand, I would grab their lower jaw and sternly say," No bite". It did take a while but now when hands get near their mouth they clam up and lick like crazy. Chewing on things, don't give them toys, that encourages biting and chewing. One drop of Tabasco and they wont bite it again.
Reply:We had a dog that chew on things til she was about a year old. But we gave her lots of toys so she would go after those. I would ask the vet how long he thinks the phase will last.
My parents had a problem with the hound dog getting into cat food, and on the kitchen table so they use a squirt bottle to get her to stop. Now we say squirt gun and she stops immediatly. I know other people who use the squirt bottle method with great results.

Continue this until he gets the message. For the destructive biting on the couch you should fill a spray bottle with WATER and then whenever you catch him chewing on the couch. Spray a little squirt and say NO firmly. Hope this helps! It worked with my dogs.

Why is my chihuahua puppy not growing?
I have had many chihuahuas over the years, so I am very familiar with the breed. Now, I have a five month-old chihuahua puppy who does not seem to be growing at a normal rate. He weighed 1.5 lbs. when I got him at 8 weeks old and he is only about 3 lbs. now. His parents were not teacup. He still has all of his puppy teeth- I do not see any adult teeth at all. He had surgery for an inguinal hernia at 6 weeks of age and the breeder's vet neutered him at that time. Could the very early neutering have something to do with why he is growing so slowly? Are there any other health issues I need to worry about?
Why is my chihuahua puppy not growing?
early neutering may affect some animals differently. next time don't neuter your puppy that early. he is miss hormones and is now probably growing at slower rate.
Reply:if he doesnt start growing take him to the vet.im sure its nothing but check to be sure.
Reply:was he the runt? he may be developing at a slower rate becoz of that. he may "catch up" to the littermates size, but then again he may not. the hernia %26amp; early spay surgeries shouldn't stunt growth. Have u talked with your vet? have u questioned the breeder? I would DEF talk with BOTH of them!
Reply:Remember we are talking about a breed that tops out at 3 or 4 or 5 pounds, so you're saying he's gone from 1.5 to 3 pounds in about 3-4 months. That's doubling his size! Now the spaying at that early an age may be an issue. I'm sure they said, "Well, while we're in there..." but 6 weeks is WAY too early to neuter him.
Reply:He is probably just going to stay very small. He may gain another pound or so. One of my chis was 9 oz at 8 weeks, about 4 mo she was about 1.5 lb. Now she is 3.5 at 5 1/2 yr old. As long as he is healthy, I wouldn't worry about the size. I sold a chi pup at 4.5 mo that only weighed a pound. She matured at just over 2 lb. The teeth are just slow on coming in. My 3.5 lb chi didn't even get her baby teeth until she was 2 mo old.

My 3.5 lb chi didn't even get her baby teeth until she was 2 mo old.

Our new pit bull puppy, she likes to bite my feet and mine alone...?
My husband brought home another puppy. When have a 1 1/2 year old male pug and a 9 month old male pit bull. When I was growing up all we had were pitbulls and boxers or a mix of them. This new female puppy that my husband brought home attacks my feet and my feet only. She totally loving for my husband and my 2 older boys. But with my she goes after my feet all the time and those little puppy teeth of hers are sharp. I will be sitting there and out of nowhere I have a puppy latched onto my ankle. Sometimes I have jumped and almost kicked her. I know she is just playing but why does she only do this to me? Is it because I am the only other female in the house? Or does she not like me?
PLEASE NO PIT BULL HATERS RESPONDING AND TELLING ME I AM HORRIBLE FOR HAVING ONE. BLAME THE DEED NOT THE BREED!!!!

If you just have sock feet that could be one thing or if you just have slippers that could be another thing. Just like people they have something they like so much and they know where they can get it and with the puppy your feet are something she like to bite and don't forget..sometime the smell of your feet. Men well maybe but not as much as a women. Find a raw hide chew stick or sticks. So each time she trys to go after your feet pull out the stick and start getting her use to that by placeing it in her mouth each time she thinks of biteing..and if you do this every day she will get the idea that the raw hide taste better and it something she can chew and not your feet. that way it will break her from biteing your feet.

Reply:Female trouble. Can you watch the Dog Whisperer or get his book. You have to establish with the little dog that you are the Top ****** in the house - she is dog playing with you now but it is an ingrown dominance thing dogs have. When she starts biting you lay her down on her belly while you sit or stand over her and hold her down until she quits struggling against you and remains peaceful and quiet - shhhhhsh her when she does something you do not like. After a time she will get the message. Also YOU can walk her and keep a firm hand on her leash and give her a good workout so she will be tired and not play puppy games - dogs really need exercise more than anything else other than food.
Reply:She is playing, but in reality, she is "herding" you or challenging you. She obviously already regards your husband and sons as dominant, but is gonna test YOU to the limit LOL
. You need to establish dominance/heirarchy with this puppy. My bullie did the same thing - you do NOT want this to continue as she grows, or it will become a problem. If she gets away with it, it will extend to visitors to the house, including children.
So... every time she does it (and right at the moment it starts)
Either growl or hiss "ssssttt!!" at her. Bend down and grab her by the scruff of the neck, or roll her over on her back (firmly, but gently - there is no need to hiurt her). Say "NO!" sternly. Don't ever pet her while she is behaving badly.
Never go to her. Call her to come to you, make her sit, then pet %26amp; reward her.
You are not horrible for having a pit bull - they are beautiful, loyal, loving companions. I think YOUR bullie got mighty lucky to join a family with you in it :-)
I wish all dogs had the same chance. Good luck with your girl.

If my puppy keeps attacking me amd biting me (doesnt have teeth) will he grow to be agressive dog?
If I try to play with him or pet him he just starts biting me and barking he does it sometimes, not all the time.
If my puppy keeps attacking me amd biting me (doesnt have teeth) will he grow to be agressive dog?
He's just playing, but you have to start setting boundaries now or he'll continue to bite and think it's OK. You need to have a toy ready for these occasions - when he bites, sternly say "NO" and stick the toy in his mouth. That way, he'll begin to associate "biting" with his toy, so use the same toy every time.
Reply:He is playing with you in the same manner he played with the other pups. Get a small stuffed toy and teach him to bite it not you!
Pups are a lot of work, get yourself a basic training book and raise dat dog right!
Reply:he's probably just playing with you, but you should start training him
Reply:Yes it is possible that he could become aggressive if he continues to bite you. You definitely want to teach your dog that biting is a bad thing. Grabbing him by the snout and tell him NO is probably the best solution. Eventually he will put two and two together and stop biting.
Reply:what breed of dog do you have?? try having play time and then after that time pet him and tell him no bite be very stern, buy the dog some chew toys he is probly teething and just keep after him and keep to the play and training daily
Reply:thump ur puppy on the nose when he/she is routty. it will teach it not to bite or chew on things also tell it "NO BITE" when u thump him/her.
good luck,

Reply:No way to know for sure at this time. I'm sure right now he's just playing. It really all depends on the breed and how it is raised. I mention breed because some breeds have a genetic tendency for something to snap inside their brains and cause viciousness. Ever hear of something called "Springer Rage?" Its a brain disorder some Springer Spanilels can get, causing them to uncontrollably turn vicious.
Reply:Don't let your puppy bite you. As soon as the puppy begins to bite flop it on its back (gently) and say "No"- this will teach your puppy that you are the top dog. Keep in mind that dogs are pack animals and it try to be the dominant one if you let it.

A couple of questions about dogs teeth?
My boyfriend told me today that his mom said that dogs teeth mold. I thought he, was crazy, is there any truth in this? I was saving all the puppy teeth that I find and was going to put them in an album with pictures of our dog.
Also, I heard that some dogs eat their teeth, is this true? I've found 4 puppy teeth so far, but I heard my dog crunching on something when she was laying down (in a room without food, or any bones to chew on). I was wondering if she ate her tooth, I tried to look in her mouth but by the time I got to her she had already swallowed whatever it was (I'm not worried about her eating something she wouldn't be, it was over a week ago and she's been fine, normal bowl movements and such).
Thanks!
A couple of questions about dogs teeth?
I have my dogs baby teeth in an album (yeah we are both crazy I guess) and it has been 9 years and they have not molded.
Dogs don't "eat" their teeth. They simply swallow them often unknowingly.
Reply:No, dogs teeth do not mold. They are made out of the same strong enamel that ours our and will stay that way after they fall out.
Yes, some dogs do swallow their teeth, but I have never seen them crunch on them, just swallow them. It isn't harmful and they will move out with the bowel movement.
Reply:In the wild dog's eat almost every part of a carcass. Skin, hair, fat, meat, and bone. It's perfectly normal for them to swallow their teeth it shouldn't cause any complications.
Dog's teeth get plaque and such like humans do if not taken care of.
Reply:No.. Teeth do not mold.. I have kitten teeth from my Siamese cats that I have had since 1983.. They will however eat their teeth when they are puppies.. It happens all the time.. I have never heard of a dog having problems after eating their puppy teeth.. It is very common.

PUP CHEWING / BITE INHIBITION
by Lyn Richards
When pups play, they spend much of their time biting and chewing each other. This is normal puppy behavior. Human skin is much more sensitive that of a pup, and it really hurts when they bite us, so we must teach pups that it is unacceptable to continue this behavior in the human pack. Another reason for stopping this behavior, is that pups learn to "dominate" with this behavior as they get older, and this causes problems in the family pet home.
Puppies chew/play bite for many other reasons. The most common one is that they cutting new teeth. This is not only painful for the pup, but it can also be uncomfortable for the pup to have loose things hanging in his mouth! Gnawing on things helps soothe the gums around the teeth, and loosen teeth as well. Many baby teeth are chewed and swallowed along with whatever they else the puppy is chewing, so do not be alarmed when they go "missing".
Most dogs will eventually outgrow misbehavior if it isn't allowed to develop. This includes inappropriate chewing and biting behaviors.
Anytime a puppy is biting/mouthing you, say "ouch" and immediately stop interacting with the pup. This is very important when playing with the pup, as well. This lets the puppy know that the biting is unacceptable, and attention stops when he does it. This method is called "OUCH" and every family member should learn to do it. The "OUCH" noise is meant to startle him into stopping the chew/biting, then give him something he can chew on, and when he chews on the replacement object, praise him with "YES, good puppy!"
If you anticipate a bite (see it coming) say "OFF" before the puppy can mouth you. If the pup is trying to get you to play with him, ask yourself, "Do I have time to play with the puppy now?" If you do, then do puppy push-ups first, or other positive 'lure and reward' training FIRST (for a few seconds), then play. If the answer is "No, I don't have time for the puppy, right now." Then you need to do a time out (crate the puppy), so the puppy can't continue to mouth you. Time outs are much more humane than yelling at a puppy.
It is necessary to teach a puppy NOT to mouth, and it is easy to do IF you make it FUN. Hold a handful of tiny treats, say "puppy take it" with a happy tone, and give the puppy one treat. Hide the rest of the treats in your closed fist and say "leave it" in that same happy tone. Once the pup waits a few seconds without touching your hand, say "puppy take it" and once again treat and praise. This exercise teaches the pup the command "leave it". You should also teach the pup to "wait" for a few seconds after his food bowl is placed on the floor, in conjunction with the "leave it" command, to avoid food dish aggression in the future.
Reply:yes you can put on a pair of leather gloves if not try some hot sauce
Reply:Don't let him bite your fingers. You will regret it. Buy him a nice rubber chew toy or a rope pull. Make sure to replace them if he starts to destroy them.
Reply:Well first off get some chew toys, he needs to chew on something else other than fingers. Ok, now for the fingers, you could try hot sauce, but not too much. I think if you do it enough he'll HATE fingers. Oh also put doggy perfume on because one they hate the smell and 2 i say doggy perfume because if they lick it they will not get sick or anything like that because it is specially made for DOGS. My dog hates the one i have for him, he shows his teeth when he sees the bottle, its called timmy holedigger. Have fun!
Reply:You should get chew toys that he likes. Redirect his biting to a toy rather than his fingers. During this time, you can teach the pup to give you one toy while you give another, trading. There is a toy called a kong that you can put dog food or treats in and freeze it. Cold may help the teething and it will keep the pup busy.

Will my puppy ever stop biting?
I have a 10.5 week old Westie who bites constantly! You can tell it's in a playful rather than "vicious" manner but I don't want him to continue this inappropriate behavior, plus those little puppy teeth are pretty strong! I have tried everything suggested in my puppy books and from online research (Bitter Apple spray--he just licks it and continues biting, gentle tap on the nose while saying "No bite!", replacing whatever he's biting with an appropriate toy, ignoring him, etc.). I am trying very hard to be patient but I'm becoming so frustrated! A fellow Westie owner and friend of mine told me nothing worked for her but he eventually outgrew this stage when his adult teeth come in.
Any other suggestions, advice, or similar stories? :-)
Will my puppy ever stop biting?
Try holding its mouth shut (not tight) and say no in the sternest way possible never smack their faces cuz then they'll think your going to smack them when you go to pet them. Or put some coins in a metal pop can and shake it when it does that or something bad. It worked for my dog.
Reply:What I do is hold their mouth shut and say NO very stern. I also tap them on the nose and say NO. The other thing you can do is push his lip into his top teeth just until he yelps a little so he knows how much his own teeth hurt. Those approaches have worked for us.
Reply:dogs bite to keep there teeth trim, and to make them stronger. Most dogs outgrow it.
Reply:first... i'm glad to hear you realize that this is inappropriate and have done your homework!
whenever he puts his teeth on you grab his snout and hold it closed while saying "no mouth" in a stern voice. Then give them a toy to chew on, such as a rope, and continue to play with him while he has that in his mouth (this is important). it is natural for puppies to want to chew and use their mouth while playing. this allows him to do it while teaching him, in a positive way, that your hand/arm/etc is not an acceptable chew toy. if he drops the toy while you are playing and goes for your hand, repeat the same thing (over and over again!)
don't get discouraged if he doesn't get it right away. just make sure you are consistent. eventually he will grab the toy on his own and try to get you to play with him.
Reply:hopefully he'll grow out of it , till then say NO in a strong voice!
Reply:Believe it or not, I have a 9 yr old Staffordshire/Boxer mix. I got her when she was 6 weeks old and the first time she nipped at me I bit her on the nose. She has never tried to bite since.
Reply:Have you tried putting him in his crate and leaving the room or putting him outside every time he bites you? Also, you can give him a chew toy after saying "no bite". Also you can yelp like a puppy and move away. Also you can put him on a leash and do some obedience excercises. The thing you have to do is take control somehow.
There is no one thing, but the dog is trying to dominate you. That's what dogs do: they try to be pack leader, and until he figures out you are pack leader, he's going to try that stuff. You have to be assertive and be in control of him at all times. It's a matter of consistency. If you are inconsistent and allow misbehavior, it will continue.
Reply:my puppy is 4.5 months old and he nips too when he bites you say ouch a little loud and then say no biting and that seems to help me
Reply:Best way to get him to stop bitting is the yell "ouch" every time he bites. He doesnt realize he is hurting you. Yelling "NO BITE" to a dog is the same as yelling "HFDSHF JKRUOIEU" it makes no sense to him because he doesnt speak english. Making a sound of pain helps him realize he is hurting you. I used that with my GSD when she jumped up and it was the only thing that made her stop.

Yes, it is perfectly fine.

normal-just his baby teeth coming out. You should be able to see adult teeth popping thru the gumline as the old ones come out.
Reply:Yes its fine... just like children dogs loose teeth, but dogs do it much faster
Reply:Yes! This is totally normal. My dog lost quite a few in a span of a few weeks and I kept finding them on the carpet. Just like kids almost!
Reply:yes, teething months are 4-7 months. she'll be fine, they grow back quickly.
Reply:Yes, they are baby teeth. He should be getting fairly close to being done, and should nearly have his adult teeth in.
Reply:It's fine, he is losing his baby teeth. If you have concerns, consult your Vet.

Why does our new puppy bite and growl viciously?
she if 9 weeks old and part rot, sheppard and retreiver.i always liked mutts better because they seemed to have more mellow tempers.but this little girl is an absolute spazz.she gets alot of loving attention and i have done all the same little techniques for bonding as in the past.my daugther would sit and bottle feed her water and cuddle with her for hours.she was welcomed in my daughters bed from day one,as sleeping with your dog is supposed to create the tightest bond of all.she was eating dry food when we got her at 6 weeks, the bottle thing was just a cute thing that my daughter enjoyed doing.the little thing was so calm and relaxed but as of 4 or 5 days ago she has turned into a tazmania devil (spinning included).im not talking the normal puppy stuff, chewing.....sharp puppy teeth play biting.....etc....etc... this puppy will show her teeth and snarl and growl as she lunges at you, grabs a hold of flesh and shakes her head.even with toys.disiplining her makes her makes it worse.
Why does our new puppy bite and growl viciously?
Looks like you have your hands full with the puppy. Seriously you need to find a qualified trainer to come out to your house. I wouldn't go to PetSmart as they are not allowed to take on behaviors like this. You actually need someone to come in home to work with you. It's alot different working in a store envioroment vs in home. I was a PS trainer for many many years.
You need to set up rules for this puppy. You have to learn how to be safe with this puppy. We are going to be a large dog and if you don't get this puppy under control now, its going to exculate into more problems than you want to deal with. I maybe wrong by the way you wrote your question, but I think there is too much babying. Bonding and babying are two different things.
I did not get my rottie until he was 10 weeks old. But the thing is, after I got him, I found out that these breeders took the puppies away from mom at 4 weeks. I wouldn't have the problems with him if they had them with mom until they were 8 weeks. I was stupid enough not to ask, because of the the breeders was a PetSmart trainer, so I assumed they knew what they were doing. They have lots of champions, I got suckered into their website. They told me that I can't believe what the books say and they know what they are doing. Well, guess what, they are wrong. Thank God being a trainer myself I can manage him. If he had gone with anyone else, they would have put him to sleep over the food aggression alone. I call him my learning dog.
Reply:Hmmm, maybe you should try taking her to obedience school? But she is also a puppy too with lots of energy, so just let her have a lot of chew toys %26amp; play w/ her a lot. Tell her "NO" anytime she tries to bite or growl at you. Remember, you're the boss.
Good luck!
Reply:first,,, taken away from the litter TOOOO YOUNG,,, has missed out on VITAL socializing skills only the mom and littermates can provide.
second,, what are the parents temperament like?? if either of the parents or their siblings or grandparents had temperament like this,,, GENETICS...
getting a mutt is very risky business
ENROLL IN BASIC OBEDIENCE,, especially for the socializing aspect of it... she appears to be a very dominate dog and you will need to learn how to train her with a variety of distractions etc.
Reply:Well part of your problem is that you got her at 6 weeks. Puppies should never leave their mother before 8 weeks.
Another problem. She's an alpha puppy. She's trying to establish dominance. Yes, they do do this at this age. Letting her sleep with your daughter is making her think that she is at least equal to her in the hierarchy. The puppy is sleeping in your daughter's 'den', so she must be equal. Since she is equal to her, she'll want to move up and be alpha over you as well.

Good luck. :)
Reply:she just want to play do u let her go outside and run around maybe she want to play with other dogs too she might be lonly just playing with us humans
Reply:Try taking her for a long walk to get rid of all her energy and hitting her will just make her more aggressive just use a simple sound or nudge when she acts up it might snap her out of it.
Reply:This puppy needs more discipline! Right now before real problems start after wards. Tell her no in a deep firm voice when she starts the growling. Then leave her alone with no attention for at least 15 minutes.Teach her who is the boss, do not give food until she sits and stays nicely, do not allow her on bed, teach her nothing in life is free aka NILF read more about this below. My puppy panjo just turned 5 weeks he is getting teeth can lap and eat solid food but still sucs from his mum?
Puppies will feed from their Moms as long as their Moms will let them. 5 weeks is still very young and I would not be disturbed until the puppy is over 8 weeks, and even then, if they can get a suck they will try. Usually by then the Moms aren't tolerating it very much and the pup then starts being weaned. You have started that process, just give it some time. Its not good for puppies to be weaned too early.
My puppy panjo just turned 5 weeks he is getting teeth can lap and eat solid food but still sucs from his mum?
Sometimes they do until about 6 or 7 weeks. Eventually, the mom will ween the puppy. As long as he is eating solid food too he is okay.
Reply:leave him be for a few more weeks, the mom usually will let them know when enough is enough. at a young age puppies still need the nutrients from their mother. it is usual for them to be wiened @ abt. 8weeks. that is when most people let their pups go from their mothers.
Reply:If the pup is eating gruel just fine, you can start allowing the mom to spend more time away from him. He'll still need a little milk, but by 6 weeks, you should allow the mom to fully wean him.
Reply:and he will until at least 6 weeks of age. or until the mom makes him stop or you dont allow him to go with her any more. but it is best to let his mom decide when he needs to eat solid food all the time.
I have worked as a Veterinary Assistant for 3 years in the military.
good luck with the pup.
Reply:whenever my dog had puppies they stayed sucking their mom even when they started eating hard food. They usually ween off after about 7 or 8 weeks.
Reply:You need to seperate them now. Moms milk should have dried up by now and as long as you allow him to nurse then she wont dry up. Its not that he needs to nurse its that he needs to be stopped now. he doesnt know any better. It hurts the mom after they get teeth to allow them to nurse.

Puppy HELP!?
my new golden puppy is crazy she runs threw the house taring paper up. i think she is stating to loose her puppy teeth is there anything i can do to make her stop taring up everthing and help her teeth?
Puppy HELP!?
Puppies tear things up, it is your job to puppy-proof your house or where your pup will be.
Reply:Puppies chew everying, period, end of story. Make sure there are plenty of chew toys around for her to chew, put away things that you don't want torn up, and maybe invest in some bitter apple spray for furniture and electronic cords that you can't move.
Reply:bones and time outs
Reply:Get her a chew toy and play with it and her. She will learn to chew on it instead of everything else.
Reply:get her some of those rawhide bones..all puppies do that at that age, welcome to "puppy parenthood". if the rawhide bones don't work, try something new...when you take her in for her shots, ask her vet to recommend something, and they'll tell ya where to get the good stuff
Reply:ok if u dont want ur puppy to tare up her teeth then buy her some stuffed animals
Reply:Take her to puppy classes ASAP. Don't wait, she might lose her ability to learn soon. I took mine at 3 months and he waits at my command. Good luck!
Reply:i have a beagle puppy who has destroyed and continues to destroy every thing in his path... i bought a metal ladybug yard decoration and he chewed that up!! into little pieces
Reply:That is exactly what puppies do. First you need to puppy proof your home. If you remove the paper she will tear up ur furniture. That's what my puppy did. Give her some chew toys such as stuff animals. Never give her rubberbands although they love it because she'll just swallow it. Something she can't swallow but her mouth can still grasp on. And whenever you catch her doing something you don't like, make sure you tell her no. That's very important. Good luck with you ur new baby. Your not suppose to take ur puppy anywhere at three months, so don't listen to the person on top. Wait till 6 months so your puppy has enough immunity to everything, or at least wait till her 3rd booster shot, then check w/ your local Petsmart.

Reply:A rawhide bone should do it.
Reply:Try wetting and freezing a washcloth and give this to her/him after it is frozen. The cold relieves the pain of growing puppy teeth. Make sure the wash cloth is new and does not have any soap or chemicals on it! Also try buying her a one of the "nylabone" bones at your petstore. "Nylabone" is the brand name and they make chew bones for teething puppies.
Other than that, make sure anything you do not want your puppy to chew is put out of reach! My puppy once chewed the pointy toe tip off an expensive pair of leather boots I had and I almost walked outside like that!
Above all, remember not to get mad at your puppy, he/she is just growing up and raising a puppy IS a responsibility. He WILL grow out of this phase soon and then you will miss those "cute puppy moments".
P.S. Make extra sure all electrical cords are safely out of puppy's way! Hope this helps!

Reply:Chewing is a perfectly normal behavior for dogs. Dogs love to chew on bones and sticks—and just about anything else available. They chew for fun, they chew for stimulation and exercise, and they chew to relieve anxiety.
But that’s not it on the list of destructive behaviors. Dogs also steal things off the counters and tabletops, and they raid the trash. Most dogs prefer human food to dog food and, if given the opportunity, will help themselves. While these behaviors are normal, dogs can, of course, be taught to control themselves. Understand that your dog needs to learn not to chew your things or steal your food—he’s not born knowing that he shouldn’t.
WHAT TO DO:
- Provide the dog with plenty of his own toys and chew bones; introduce something new every day or two.
- Give the dog a “single serving” chew bone once or twice a day—something he will finish in one chew session (i.e. Greenie, Dentabone, rawhide chip, etc.).
- Identify the times of the day when your dog is likely to chew, and give him a stuffed Kong, Goodie Ship, or Buster Cube at this time. You can include some of his daily ration of food in the toy.
- Discourage chewing inappropriate items with chewing deterrents, such as Bitter Apple or Chew Guard* (see below for application tips).
- Always supervise your dog. If you see him licking or chewing an item he shouldn’t, say “uh uh,” remove the item from his mouth and insert something that he can chew. Be sure to praise him.
- Booby-trap the counters and tables to discourage the dog from jumping up. You can try double-sided sticky tape, cookie sheets placed precariously so they fall down if the dog touches them and a pyramid of empty soda cans all tied together and placed so that they fall if the dog touches them (you can tie to a small tidbit of food to this contraption). You can also place “baits” to be stolen: food adulterated with bad-tasting substances, such as Tabasco or Bitter Apple.
WHAT NOT TO DO:
- Do not show the dog the damage and spank, scold, or punish him after the fact.
- There are dog training books still being published today that advocate dangerous and inhumane techniques, such as using duct tape to hold a dog’s mouth closed around a chewed object, or filling a hole with water and holding a dog’s head under. Just in case it’s not obvious—methods such as these are ineffective and horribly cruel!
- Do not crate the dog for lengthy periods of time to prevent destructive chewing.
* Using taste deterrents: When you first use the deterrent, apply a small amount to a piece of tissue or cotton wool. Place it directly into the dog’s mouth, allow him to taste it and then spit it out. The dog has learned the link between the taste and the odor of the substance and will be more likely to avoid chewing items that smell like the substance. Re-apply the deterrent to the off-limits objects every day for 2-4 weeks.
You can give her ice. It will help her lose her teeth, but numb them until then so they don't hurt as badly.

New puppy keeps biting the other dog in the house?
So i have a 2 yr old boxer, my roomate bought a choc lab about 2 months ago so he's about 4 months old now. Ever since we brought the puppy home when he plays with my boxer he likes to bite at his jowels, and neck basically any lose skin that he can get his teeth on. Which i must add are sharp cause they're still puppy teeth.
My boxer is now missing a bunch of fur all over his lips, neck he has scabs on his face. It's to the point that i cant let them play anymore cause im affraid it'll get infected. (boxers tend to have skin issues with there faces)
It's weird too cause my boxer will put up with it and will not bite him back.
There have been times when the puppy is just hanging off my boxers lips.
Is this normal that he's still doing this. Whenever i see him doing this i tell him NO in a firm voice and take him off of my boxer and put a CHEW TOY in his moulth.
I feel bad having to seperate them when they want to play.
Any advise, or common storys from anyone else?
New puppy keeps biting the other dog in the house?
It's normal puppy behavior, which is why your boxer is tolerating it. It will soon improve as the puppy gets older. Honestly, if the Boxer is annoyed or in pain, he will let the puppy know. If you are worried about injuries, then just correct the puppy and give him a chew toy like you have been doing, but you don't need to protect the Boxer; like I said, he will correct the puppy if he feel he is pushing it too far.
My older dogs always seem to get scabs around their face and neck when a new puppy is around and it always clears up, but if you are worried then take the Boxer to the vet to have it checked out.
Reply:Your boxer is good natured, and the puppy just wants to play. I have a great dane and a jack russell. The Jack Russell puts her whole head in the Great Dane's mouth-- luckily she must not taste good- the Dane hasn't eaten her yet, but this is how they play. Keep a rawhide around for the puppy-- that helps. But let them have supervised play too-- dogs will be dogs!

What will you do then? Best to fix it now..

Reply:You got to show the puppy who is boss, Take a news paper and swat him and tell him he is a bad boy. Or put him a collar and chain on and tie him up so he cant play and after you do that a while he will learn when he bites he will get tied up he will finally get the message.
If you don't learn him now he will get out of control more as he gets older.

Reply:The first problem is the puppy is teathing and needs something irresistable to chew on. I recommend you go to the butcher and get dog bones. They are much healthier and tastier. If the dog has this in its mouth it won't have your dogs face in it.
The second problem is that both dogs are male. This is going to go on until the puppy is an adult and one dog proves dominance over the other, but even after that they will fight every once in a while.....Just thank god you don't have two females.....In any case opposite sex dogs in a multiple dog situation have less issues than same sex dogs. Either way you should get them both neutered. This will stop the hormones that make them squabble.
As far as training the dog, It needs to learn the command leave it. the dog should respond to this command by now, if not It has not been trained properly and needs to be worked with. Major pet stores offer classes for about $100 for 8 weeks of great training. This also socializes the dog.
Reply:the boxer is calm, which is nice, the puppy is a puppy. i have a 3mo old lab too. she just wants to feel everything in her mouth. normal. they are play biting, one day the boxer will bite her back, and the pup will get the idea.. and you are right about correcting her , and giving a substitute chew, thats what i call it, anything that is puppy approved that is not human skin, or another animal... keep doing it, keep chews or rawhides, or pig-ears on hand. we went thru a lot of them, still are, but she no longer will bite skin at all. which is good since i have little ones...just keep correcting the pup, she will get it eventually. let them play to learn... its the only way. but do not leave unsupervised till its better...

My puppy will NOT stop biting?
alright my puppy is 6 months old. shes a papillon and all her puppy teeth are gone. she has all adult teeth now maybe 1 or 2 still growing in. she bites as if its a fun game. if i get down on the floor to play with her she immediately goes to bite my hands. if shes in a hyper-ish mode she will bite. she only bites me and my mom but not guests or people she meets for the first time. i really want a non-harmful effective way to teach my puppy that biting hurts me. btw me and my mom think that our puppy thinks that our hands arent connected to us. she wont bite our face but shell bite everything else. so please SAVEEE MEEE

Reply:Before you go to play with her put either Bitter Apple or the glunk for kids who thumbsuck on your hands then let her find out they taste terrible. Reputable breeders routinely use Bitter Apple on hands and shoes to teach wee pups not to bite either.
Reply:Yelp loudly (like a dog would) when she does this and tell her "no" in a firm voice while gently shaking her by the nape of the neck. Be consistent. You may have to do this several times, but she will eventually get it.
Now is the time she will be learning the rules about living with people.
Reply:My pugs used to do the same thing. They grew out of it a bit and now instead of "biting" they... "mouth" I suppose. They grab hands in their mouth and just hold, not hard though.
When they were still biting we told the vet about it, she says you have to "gag" them so they learn biting leads to something unpleasant. Basically you just press down on her tongue with your fingers while they're in her mouth. Make sure to say "no!" firmly but not angrily (you don't want to scold for the playing).
Good luck with your puppy!
Reply:all puppies do this; mine did.. i still have a small scar on one of my knuckles from where her tooth cut me.
Now she wont bite, even if you stick your fingers/hand in her mouth.
What we did, was, if she ever bit someone, or tried to, we would take her mouth, and hold it shut, and so "NO", and after awhile of doing that sher learned to never put her teeth on anyone. Worked like a charm. ( i think this was something the puppy training instructor told us to try).

Reply:I don't know if it's too late to do this, but you might want to yelp and show that it hurts when you bite. That's how puppies learn from their litter mates. As soon as she bites, yelp like it hurts alot.
Another suggestion is as soon as she starts biting, ignore her (meaning get up from playing w/ her on the floor and even leave the room). Then she might get the message that its not acceptable. You have to be consistent about it or else it won't work.
Reply:Grab her snout and squeeze it till she whimpers..this is what the mother would do if the pup bit her too hard. Give it a try..
Reply:Take a soda can or any can really and wash it out. Then take some pennies 5 to 6 and put them in the can. You now have a penny can. Keep it with you and when she goes to bite you shake it. She will stop! Then give her a chew toy and walk away. When she is chewing the chew toy just tell her she's a good dog. You always want to turn a negative into a positive! The penny can is also good to stop excessive barking. Have a good one;~)
Reply:Technique #1 – yelp and walk away:
Puppies are very social creatures and refusing to engage in play can be an effective training technique. As soon as puppy starts to bite or nip, give a loud, yelping OUCH!!! Glare at the pup, get up and move away. After a minute or so, get a toy and return to puppy. Encourage the puppy to play with the toy. If he goes for you with a nip, repeat yelping and walking away.
Technique #2 – shake can:
If puppy does not respond to a verbal command only, try a shake can. Get an empty and clean soda can and place about 10 pennies in it. Tape the mouth shut. When your pup starts to nip, give the verbal command and at the same time give the can a good shake or drop it next to puppy (not on him please). This will help reinforce the verbal command. As soon as he stops, praise and give him a good toy to chew.
Technique #3 – shake down:
If Techniques 1 and 2 fail, then try this. I am not as fond of it as it involves physically grabbing the pup for reinforcing the "No Bite!". Start with a loud yelping OUCH; at the same time as you grasp the loose skin on puppy's neck. Give a firm scruff but not a shake and firmly say "NO BITE!" Do not pull puppy up and away, just scruff him. Release puppy and get him involved with a good toy. After a while, stop the scruff and just use the verbal.
Reply:Well I know alot about dogs, so heres the things about young ones. THEY LOVE ATTENTION!!!!! This means good or bad, so when they bite and you scold they are still getting attention. What you have to do is play with her, put a toy in her mouth before you play, if she bites you simply get up and leave her in a room alone. She will not get attention when she bites. Try to teach her that it hurts when she bites you, she will sooner or later get so tired of being alone that she will catch on. Another way would be to use a news paper or a flat pice of wood, (not on her) on furniture or the floor. If she bties you then loudly smack the the floor, this scares most dogs, then get up and leave. This is like traning her to be more careful.
Reply:i was always told you need to put your hand out palm up before you touch a dog...they see it less threatening....all the dogs i have had i did this too and never had a problem once the puppy matures...however, if this doesn't work you may need to be a little more forceful with your dog...grab its snout and say very firmly...BAD DOG....after doing this several times your dog will stop biting you...you need to be persistent.
Reply:Yelp loudly (like a dog would) when she does this and tell her "no" in a firm voice. Also you can warp a blanket around your hands and arms even when she bites the blanket tell her "no" firmly.
Reply:Your puppy is showing dominance, and you as pack leader need to "speak" dog and stop this behavior immediately to avoid bigger problems when she's older. It sounds like she very much likes to play, so, to show her that you do not like the biting, you have to stop playing the second she does it. Dogs do not connect actions from 5 minutes ago to a punishment right now, you have to correct bad behavior IMMIDIATELY.
When your playing and she bites, say NO loudly, then cross your arms (to hide hands) and turn your back to her. You may want to sit in the floor to do this, since you'll have to turn away a few times. Also, DO NOT talk to her during correction. After a couple of minutes, play with her again. NOTE: she will bite again. REPEAT CORRECTION. She has to learn that biting leads to no attention, and as soon as she does, she'll stop. You will have to correct her repeatedly, immidiately, and without fail EVERY SINGLE TIME she bites-- but she should show a difference in biting in about a week. Good luck.
Reply:pu your hand around his mouth and say no
Reply:Bite him back! Im kidding, his still a baby and his probably teething, so anything he comes into contact with he will bite on. He will stop with his bitting once he has his adult teeth, get him chewy toys to chew on in the meantime.

Do some people get their CHIHUAHUA PUPPIES baby teeth pulled if they dont fall out?
I have a chihuahua puppy who is almost 3 months old. I have been reading about their ears because he only has one ear standing right now. I came across 2 articles that said that these people took their chihuahua puppies to the vet and they pulled the puppy's baby teeth that didnt fall out. Is that common in chihuahua's or any other dogs? If so, how will I know if he needs that done? He only has one ear standing, but I believe its still early for him and hes most definitely in the teething stage since he's not even 3 months yet.
Do some people get their CHIHUAHUA PUPPIES baby teeth pulled if they dont fall out?
You only need to pull the baby teeth if they don't fall out. I like to give them until 9-12 months to decide. Of five chihuahuas I'v had (and the 4 puppies raised who other people have), only one had teeth pulled (at 9 or 10 months), I let my other one go a little longer and they came out on their own. Usually the teeth you will see a problem with are the canines (generally the upper set more so than the lower).
As for ears, did the ear ever stand to your knowledge (it may have stood at the breeders before you got him)? If it has it will stand. If it hasn't, there is still a very good chance it will. Some chis take longer for their ears to stand and some have them stand and fall until one day they stay up. I have one that took almost a year before his ears stayed up and then if he was really asleep, they'd flop again. Now at 6 his ears are never floppy.
Reply:the baby teeth dont fall out until they are about 5 months old. if they dont fall out by then then i dont see why they shouldnt get pulled
Reply:Retained puppy teeth are usually only remved when they keep the adult teeth from coming in, or are growing the new teeth next to the puppy teeth. Your pup's teeth should begin falling out on their own at any time now..
This loss of puppy teeth and arrival of adult teeth usually starts around four months and finishes around six to eight months, the timing varies by breed and individual dog.

Reply:yes they can be pulled out. not till the puppy is 6 months old. then check with your vet. If you are going to get you puppy spayed then you can have it done at the same time.
Reply:Usually the deciduous teeth (baby teeth) start falling out about four months of age and the last teeth to come in are the canines at six months. Small breed dogs like Chi's and daschunds sometimes get retained baby teeth that can be removed while they are under anesthesia for their spay/neuter. It may take a while for the teeth to fall out, and the vet will pull them only if the adult teeth have come in and the baby teeth haven't fallen out yet. They take them out at this time to prevent malocclusions and cavities. Don't worry about it too much, it's a pretty routine thing that vets and techs are supposed to check for while the dog is in for a neuter. If you notice that the teeth haven't come out by the time the adult teeth have come in, ask your vet to pull them.
Good luck!
Reply:Any retained puppy teeth need to be removed. If there are what people call "two sets of teeth", or adult teeth in (usually the canines) when the baby teeth are still there, they need to be removed. If left in, they can mess up the dogs bite and bacteria and decay build up between the two teeth and cause bad breath and tooth decay.
Check with your vet if you think the baby teeth are not coming out.

My 12 week old puppy just chipped one of his baby incisor teeth badly, what should i do?
I looks like the root is exposed but he is showing no sign of pain. There is only a few weeks left before they fall out, do i need to be worried about infection?

If he isn't in pain don't worry about it....its gonna fall out soon anyway.
Reply:Absolutely. Fragile areas are now exposed.
Take him to the vet.
Reply:what did he do fall on his face? jus let them fall out
Reply:I'd be more worried about it causing a cut on the pups gowl. I'd get the pup into the vets to either have it pulled out or if it doesn't need that then have what is left smooth down so it doesn't cause any injury to the pups lip!

Reply:If he is eating and functioning normally with no sign of pain, then I would just wait for them to fall out. Take him to the vet if it will make you feel better, but I personally would not worry too much. If it gets infected you will know.
Reply:Take your pet to the vet for some check up~ Veterinarians would know wat to do with your pet.
Reply:I would go to the vet and have him or her to take a look. That would be the best thing that i know of.
Reply:Take the puppy to the vet.
It could get really infected if he puts something in his mouth or something.. and well, things wont be 'pretty' if that happens...
Taking him to the vet will save him a lot of pain and serious dental problems.
Reply:Call your vet, see what they say. They might tell you not to worry since they are going to fall out anyway. If it will make you feel better call them and explain to them what happend and where it is. They will give you the best advice.
Reply:No possible way,he will be fine. Pups often chip or even knock baby teeth out with no bad results at maturity.
Reply:dogs have to be hurt beyond imagination to cry out. they are very stoic otherwise
take your dog to the vet. If the tip of a tooth was broken you ignor that, but into the gums your dog needs medical attention
Reply:If it isn't bothering him and he is eating and drinking without any pain then i would wait and it will fall out. to be sure i would call a vet and ask what he or she thinks.
Reply:One always worries about infection, but unless your pup is Clifford (The Big Red Dog) he is easy enough to pick up %26amp; check every 3 or so days. A jagged tooth would drive my tongue crazy, but I don't know how your dog is reacting to the sharp edges.
I avoid anaesthetic when I can, and if the "chip" is down to the gum-line the vet is sure to need to anaesthetise the pup before pulling the remains of the tooth. At 12 weeks old it is likely to be only days rather than weeks before the incisors shed.

My 12 week old puppy just chipped one of his baby incisor teeth badly, what should i do?
If he isn't in pain don't worry about it....its gonna fall out soon anyway.
Reply:Absolutely. Fragile areas are now exposed.
Take him to the vet.
Reply:what did he do fall on his face? jus let them fall out
Reply:I'd be more worried about it causing a cut on the pups gowl. I'd get the pup into the vets to either have it pulled out or if it doesn't need that then have what is left smooth down so it doesn't cause any injury to the pups lip!

Adult teeth?
My puppy is 6 months now. Some of the adult teeth are out and puppy teeth droped, but some of her adult teeth are out but the puppy teeth still there. Would the they drop by itself eventually? How long should I wait before I take her to Vet to remove the puppy teeth?
Adult teeth?
If she still has residing baby teeth by the time of her spay, your vet will pull them out then. We do that all of the time, it is very routine. She will be under anesthetic anyways :)
UPDATE: I would give her another month, if they do not fall out on their own, have them pulled. You would hate for her bite to be off... could cause jaw issues.
Reply:Wait for a little while and just watch the gums to make sure there's no splitting. When I was losing my teeth I had a couple like that and I was okay, so how different could it be for a puppy? If nothing seems wrong and she's still eating she'll be perfectly fine.
Reply:I routinely see deciduous canines in 6mo old dogs. Usually they fall out around 5-6 mo of age, but they can be taken out when you bring you dog in to be spayed. Which you are planning to do soon, right? If they are left in, they cause accumulation of food and tartar around the teeth. Advances dental problems.

Golden retriever puppy chipped tooth!?
Today, my golden retriever puppy chipped one of her fang-like top teeth. I was wonering what should I do, it's basically the root ring and a little on the top, oh and it's a baby tooth.
Golden retriever puppy chipped tooth!?
If it is a jagged break you will have to bring her into the vets to have it smoothed down so she doesn't rip her jowls or puncher her tongue..
It should still be checked out by your vet to make sure it will not get infected and cause problems later.
Reply:Just watch closely. As long as she keeps eating, and the gum does not become inflamed/infected, everything should be fine and it should fall out by 5-6 months old. If it doesn't on its own, or if she has any trouble the vet can remove it under sedation.
Reply:This Happened to my Lab Puppy. Take to the vet if you can see the gum in the tooth but if not it will get loose and fall out.
Reply:Be sure to only let your puppy have tough rubber toys. If you can put a fingernail imprint in it, your good. Rawhide, pig ears, and similar are BAD for any dog, especially pups (just ask your vet how bad they are!) Plush toys CAN be bad as well. Some dogs eat the stuffing and while most of the time it will pass through, sometimes it doesn't...
Reply:Hi ,
I understand it is a baby tooth but can still become serious...
You need to have the VET take a look .....especially if the internal portion of the tooth or pulp is involved.
The pulp of the tooth contains the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth. Teeth with pulp exposure are painful. When the pulp of a tooth is exposed, bacteria can enter into the tooth and infect the pulp causing a large infection.
I hope this has helped. I don't always tell people to run to the vet, but in this case.... A vet visit is in order. Good Luck

My Chow-mix chipped one of her lovely long incisors when she was young, but not as deeply as yours.
Vet said it happens and not to worry -- break did not expose the living matter inside the tooth.
(In fact I have a couple in my mouth chipped like that -- maybe my dog inherited the trait! ;-} )
Keeping an eye on it is always a good idea.

Do puppies loose teeth very quickly?
My pit puppy is 4 months and has lost 6 baby teeth in the last 48 hours. I was expecting it to be slower, is this normal?
Do puppies loose teeth very quickly?
I DIDNT KNOW PUPPIES LOOSE TEETH!!!
**** DUDE
IM COMING SPOT DONT LOSE YOUR TEETH ON ME NOW
HOLY CRAPPPPP
Reply:It is normal. My Airedale puppy lost all his teeth pretty quickly. When your puppy had his/her next checkup with the vet, just ask about it, and the vet can check that his/her teeth are coming in ok.
Here's a suggestion: give your puppy an ice cube to chew on. Their gums are sore!
Reply:Puppies start losing their teeth at 3 months - incisors first. The adult canine, molars and premolars come in between 4 and 7 - 8 months. Don't worry, your puppy's fine - just has sore gums. Give him lots of things to chew on to help.
Reply:Yes everthing is fine, most of the time people dont notice as they swallow them, watch his second teeth grow!
Reply:Yes. They can loose them that quickly.
It all depends on the type of dog and what they do. Pits are strong chewers and have strong jaw muscles. I would guess that your puppy likes to chew its toys a lot?
That usually helps any loose teeth come out.
Also, don't worry if you don't see many teeth around the house. Most dogs will swallow them, which is normal and doesn't harm them.

Are you familiar with Chinese Crested Puppies-- mix, teeth?
My husband brought home an sickly, pregnant female about 3-4 weeks ago. She had puppies 10 days ago, two hairless, one puff and three short-haired. She has been to the vet three times and is now on cephalexin. The intestinal worms are gone, she is heartworm cleared now. We are waiting on shots until she has weaned her babies. She is up to 11lbs.
Two questions-- Do the teeth "age" the same on this breed as others? The teeth look like the dog is 7-8, but the people swear she was 1 or 2.
These puppies are huge! I can't imagine what she bred with. Can the crossbreeds be bald or puffy just like the purebreds in the breed? The vet is unsure of the genetic/loci involved in coat.
I am considering supplementing these puppies a lot just to get the load off of mom. She wasn't healthy when we got her. Opinions on that? Mom is eating Canidae and sometimes Hills puppy depending on what we have at home.

the hairless gene comes with poor denation. The teeth are often smaller, and have thinner enamel. Dental loss is common, and actually acceptable in the show ring, only for the hairless.
The puffs should have normal dentation.
Yes, mixed breed puppies can be hairless. Short coats very rarely show up in Cresteds, and are not desired.. I have only seen pics of a short haired puff, also called the terrier coat.
How the hairless gene works. The hairless gene is dominant over the puff gene. A powder puff only carries puff Genes Pp Pp. A hairless Carries both Hl Pp. The hairless gene, although dominant, is also considered lethal.. any embryo that recieves two Hl (Hl Hl) genes will not develop and will reabsorb in the mother's body.
Most breeds of dogs contain only the Pp gene. There are a few other hairless dogs.. and the genes work the same way as the crested. All other hairless dogs have short haired puffs..a puff mexican hairless looks like your average terrier mix! The Crested is the only hairless dog with long hair.
The only exception to this rule is the American Hairless terrier.. the gene there is recessive.. they are a mutation from the Rat Terrier.
If you breed 2 puffs (cresteds, or any other breed) you will only get puffs.
If you breed a hairless and a puff (any breed), you can get any combination. The hairless pups obviously got the hairless gene from the hairless parent.
If you breed a hairless to a hairless (any breed), you can get any combination, since they carry both genes.
The hairless can vary in amount of body hair. From nothing but a sparse mohawk and a few stray hairs, to what appears to be a full body coat! Some almost look like a puff.. the only difference is that the coat is a fine single layer, instead of the thick double coat. A very hairy hairless will ussually be hairless somewhere underneath also.
If you want more info about cresteds, come join www.crestedsrock.com its a forum about Chinese Cresteds.. you can learn skin care and other information.. and if you need it, get help finding homes for those puppies. My name there is nekkiddoglady. :)
Reply:puppies inherit a variety of traits it just happens they inherited different hair traits. Chinese Crested have teeth loss and thats why their tongue sticks out. I doubt that the Chinese Crested could have puppies at 7 or 8. You can't always guess the age through teeth, its just one of the ways when you don't have any other information but it sometimes isnt accurate. They can be powderpuff and hairless too.

When I got my puppy 3 weeks ago I was told she was 8-9 weeks old...BUT....she is already losing her teeth...?
does this sound right?
Do dogs lose their teeth at 11-12 weeks? I am a bad mommy and can't remember when her big sister lost hers...but I don't remember her being this young.
She has only lost her bottom ones in the front (not her incisors/K9) and only one on the top.
When I got my puppy 3 weeks ago I was told she was 8-9 weeks old...BUT....she is already losing her teeth...?
Usually it starts around 4 months (16 weeks), but the order in which you say they are falling out, is normal. I wouldn't worry about it, if her teeth and gums generally look healthy. Its possible you were lied to when you got her, or she's just losing them a bit early.
Are you taking her for a round of vaccinations soon? Maybe have the vet take a look next time you're in, see what they think. Good luck with the pup!
Reply:Depending on the dog they can loose them earlier or later, just like children, they all don't stop and start at the same age. Nothing to be concerned about :)

Puppies/ milking teeth?
my staffie was still losing them at 6 months.
guess it depends on if you give them enough chew toys.
mine was a rescue so she probably didn't get chew toys.
Reply:Milk teeth have nothing to do with it.. They'll start biting on hands before they start teething.. If you don't correct them, and you have taken them from mom too early they will continue to bite and chew on people..Forget waiting for the teeth to fall out, start training him..
